The problem of water hardness in the area

The main problem with the sports complex was limescale deposits caused by the high degree of water hardness.

In the area of Catalonia the degree of hardness is around 40ºfH, and is considered a hard water. This type of water contains a high level of magnesium and calcium salts which are very harmful to the installations.

.

Lime: a powerful enemy of the installations

The negative effects caused by lime were evident in the secondary hot water circuits. The heat exchangers were clogged as a result of limescale build-up in the narrow channels of the plates.

This obstruction reduced the efficiency of the thermal exchange, leading to increases in the boiler’s energy consumption. In addition, the maintenance team had to clean or replace the plate heat exchangers, pipes, stopcocks, etc. on a monthly basis. This causes constant stoppages in the production of sanitary hot water and high cleaning costs.

After the sizing calculation, two Dropson EMI 9000 anti-scale systems were installed in parallel with a sediment filter to solve the lime problems in the sports centre.

Remarkable results after six months of operation

The director of the centre and his maintenance department certify the effectiveness of the Dropson electronic water softener, a new generation anti-scale system. After six months of uninterrupted use of the appliance, the installations were free of lime, achieving optimum boiler performance and avoiding unnecessary expenditure of energy resources.

On the other hand, the monthly cleanings that were previously carried out were not necessary and there was no further shutdown of hot water production. In addition, the mechanical control elements of the showers were restored to their original water-saving functions, the faucets were free of limescale build-up and the flow problems disappeared.
